What is Distance Education?
The term Distance Education is used to describe an educational situation where the instructor and students are separated by time, location or both. Education is delivered either synchronously (define) or asynchronously (define), depending upon the technology used to the remote locations. The means of instruction utilize written correspondence, text, graphics, audio and videotapes, CDs, interactive TV, Internet, audio/video conferencing and such technology. The definition of e-learning is included in Distance Learning since it only concentrates on use of electronic devices.
Why to Choose Distance Learning
Distance learning makes it much easier for some students to complete a degree or get additional job-training while balancing work and family commitments. Because the hours when class work can be completed are flexible, as most distance learning programs allow students to work at their own pace and on their own time, many students can complete their work during times when they are free, rather than scheduling their lives around a set classroom time. With more flexibility comes more responsibility on the part of the learner. Students must learn to work well independently and without the constant guidance and monitoring of an instructor, making distance learning a challenge for those who are not easily self-motivated.
The Objective of Distance Education in Pakistan
The objective of establishing Distance Education at Pakistan Institute of Distance Learning (PIDL) is to promote Distance Education through e-learning using modern Information and Communication Technologies, to enhance quality of education and to optimize the services of qualified, experienced teachers and researchers at PIDL, and to contribute towards the knowledge based economy of the country/nation. We also aim to have interaction with the renowned international academicians for imparting up-to-date knowledge and instill creativity skills in our youth.
